Top 5 Fully-Funded Scholarships for Nigerians in 2025

Fully-funded scholarships cover your tuition, accommodation, flights, and living expenses — meaning a student from any financial background can attend a world-class university if they apply correctly. Here are the five most accessible ones for Nigerians in 2025, with honest information about what each actually requires.

1. Chevening Scholarship (UK)

Chevening is the UK government's flagship international scholarship, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. It covers full tuition at any UK university, a monthly living allowance (currently £1,173 in London, £1,002 outside London), return flights, and a one-time arrival allowance. In 2024, Nigeria ranked among the top five countries globally for Chevening applications.

The minimum requirements: a bachelor's degree with at least second-class upper (2:1) equivalent, two years of full-time work experience, and the intention to return to Nigeria for at least two years after completing the scholarship. Note that "work experience" can include formal employment, self-employment, or a structured internship — it does not have to be in your study subject area.

The application opens each August and closes in November. The most common reason Nigerian applicants are rejected is weak leadership essays — Chevening is specifically looking for people with the potential to influence policy or systems in their sector, and vague answers about wanting to "give back" don't distinguish you from thousands of other applicants. Specific, concrete examples of decisions you've made, teams you've led, or systems you've changed are what selectors are looking for.

2. Commonwealth Masters and PhD Scholarships (UK)

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission offers two separate awards for Nigerians: the Commonwealth Masters Scholarship (for students from lower-middle-income countries, which Nigeria qualifies as) and the Commonwealth PhD Scholarship. Both cover tuition, airfare, and a monthly stipend.

Unlike Chevening, Commonwealth scholarships require nomination through your home country's nominating agency — in Nigeria, this is the Federal Scholarship Board (FSB) under the Ministry of Education. You apply to the FSB, which then nominates candidates to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. This means the internal selection at FSB level is itself competitive, and you should apply to the FSB well before the end-of-year deadline.

These scholarships are particularly well-suited to applicants who want to study subjects with direct development relevance — public health, agriculture, education policy, engineering, and similar fields are historically stronger choices than pure arts or business.

3. MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program

The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program currently operates at 32 universities worldwide, including McGill University, University of Toronto, Sciences Po, and several African universities. It provides full funding — tuition, living expenses, books, and travel — specifically for academically talented students from Sub-Saharan Africa who lack the financial means to attend university.

Each participating university runs its own application process, but the program's core criteria are consistent: strong academic performance, demonstrated leadership, financial need, and commitment to contributing to Africa's development. Because the program runs through individual universities rather than a central application, you apply to the MasterCard Foundation program at the same time as applying to the university itself — and not all universities accept applications from all countries, so check the specific institution's eligibility rules.

For Nigerian applicants, McGill University and the University of Edinburgh are among the most accessible entry points to this scholarship, and both actively recruit from Nigeria.

4. Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship

The Aga Khan Foundation offers postgraduate scholarships to outstanding students from developing countries — covering roughly half the cost as a grant and the other half as a loan repayable after graduation. Nigeria is among the eligible countries. Applications are submitted through the Aga Khan Foundation's Nigeria office and are assessed on academic merit, financial need, and the student's potential to contribute to their community.

The scholarship covers master's programs only (not undergraduate or PhD), and the subject area is open. The half-grant, half-loan structure is worth understanding clearly: the loan portion typically carries a low interest rate and flexible repayment terms, but it is a real financial obligation. For students heading to programs with strong employment outcomes, this structure is very manageable — for students choosing programs with less predictable salary trajectories, it deserves careful thought before accepting.

5. DAAD Scholarships (Germany)

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers a range of scholarships for international students to study at German universities. Many programs are taught in English at no tuition cost — Germany does not charge tuition at public universities even for international students. DAAD scholarships cover living expenses (currently €934/month for master's students), health insurance, and travel subsidies.

For Nigerian applicants, the In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme and the Development-Related Postgraduate Courses (EPOS) are the most accessible entry points. Both focus on students whose studies relate to development priorities — engineering, environmental science, economics, agriculture, and public administration are strong fields. German language skill is generally not required for English-medium programs, but learning basic German before arrival significantly improves day-to-day quality of life.

The Honest Advice About Scholarship Applications

The single most important thing to understand about any of these scholarships is that meeting the minimum requirements does not mean you will receive an award. Chevening received over 70,000 applications globally in its most recent cycle for roughly 1,800 places. The Commonwealth scholarships are similarly oversubscribed. Being well-qualified is necessary but nowhere near sufficient — the quality of your written application, the specificity of your leadership examples, and the clarity of your career narrative are what actually separate successful applicants from unsuccessful ones.

At PB Cambridge Consult, we work through scholarship applications in detail with students — reviewing drafts, pressure-testing the logic of their career goals, and ensuring that every essay is actually answering the question the scholarship body asked, rather than the question the student wished they'd been asked.
